A diving knife is an essential piece of equipment to have on any serious diving trip. If you become entangled underwater you could be in serious trouble if you don’t have a way to cut yourself loose. There are two common materials that diving knives are made from: titanium and steel. The question is: which one is better?
A titanium diving knife is twice as expensive as a steel knife. For one, titanium doesn’t rust and the material is light and strong. Steel knives rust easily and are weightier, which is not a benefit under water. If you only go diving every now and then, a steel blade is fine, but otherwise it’s worth investing in a titanium diving knife.
Being a photographer for National Geographic has got to be one of the best jobs in the world. I particularly love their underwater photography. The way the light hits the water combined with the colorful fish and coral is magnificent.
I recently learned that the scuba purge mask was designed with underwater photographers in mind. The traditional way to clear a mask is to use one hand to press down on the nose bridge and then blow air through the nose. A photographer with equipment doesn’t have a spare hand. To clear their mask, they simply have to be upright and blow through the nose. Here’s to great underwater inventions!
