The Northwest of the United States is home to the Puget Sound, one of the most renowned locations in the world for scuba diving. Though the waters of the Puget Sound are not as clear as other diving locations in the world, there are several coastal dives featuring sunken ships, automobiles, and other objects of interest. When scuba diving in the Northwest, keep in mind that the water is a good deal colder than most tropical locations, therefore ensure that you stay warm when you get out of the water to prevent hypothermia. It’s also wise to take a diver’s light to see in the murkier depths, and keep an eye out for fish and octopi.
When diving in Puget Sound, it is possible to bring your own scuba equipment, or borrow from one of the scuba rental locations common near the coast. Though owning your own equipment will save money in the long run if you dive or intend to dive often.
When you’re preparing to take your maiden voyage into the world of scuba diving, don’t forget to bring the essentials. You’ll need a reliable breathing apparatus, a skin-tight suit to keep you warm and protected from underwater obstructions, and of course some flippers. Flippers are advantageous for the fledgling diver as well as the seasoned pro because they ad mobility to your progress under water.
If you desire the greatest possible range of motion, you’ll need open-foot fins that attach to scuba boots. These fins are designed to alleviate fatigue that might otherwise mount in your lower legs and feet during an extended dive. Lastly, check that your scuba diving flippers are equipped with channels in the blades. Flippers with a large central channel have been shown to offer the most propulsion potential as you glide through the water.
