In the news of late have been tales of carnivorous squid latching their spiny tentacles to scuba divers off the coast of Mexico and California. No, this isn’t a scene out of the latest horror movie, or from some kind of Lovecraftian novel; it’s actually happening. The Humboldt squid, which are often found at much lower depths, have been moving towards the surface. Most scientists believe global warming is the culprit, as the Humboldt have moved to the surface in search of food. Scuba divers have had their scuba gear attacked during regular dives, as schools of the aggressive squid swim throughout the waters. While few encounters with the Humboldt have resulted in fatality, the squid can be deadly if provoked, and in large numbers.
There have been tales of Humboldt squid attaching to air tanks, and dive masks, giving scuba divers a real scare for their lives. Even experienced divers have elected to stay out of the water at this point, but some are still braving the dangerous seas for a once in a lifetime experience.
